At around 8:00 AM, depart from your hotel for a scenic drive of approximately 50 km (about 90 minutes) to Phnom Kulen. Along the way, enjoy views of the Cambodian countryside before ascending this historically and spiritually significant mountain.
Upon arrival, visit the remains of a small 9th-century laterite temple, quietly nestled near the waterfall. Continue to explore the forested area on foot, where you will reach the famous riverbed carved with hundreds of
lingams. Hidden just beneath the flowing water, these ancient carvings symbolize fertility and are considered sacred in Hindu tradition.
Phnom Kulen holds deep religious importance for both Hindus and Buddhists. It was here, in 802 AD, that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java, marking the foundation of the Khmer Empire. The river
itself is believed to be holy, as the king once bathed in its waters, which were redirected to reveal and carve the sandstone beneath. Among the carvings, you can also see a depiction of the Hindu god Vishnu resting on the serpent Ananta, with Lakshmi at his feet and Brahma emerging from a lotus.
The river flows into a picturesque waterfall and natural pool, offering a refreshing and tranquil setting to relax and take in the beauty of the surroundings.
Next, visit Ang Tho, a 16th-century Buddhist monastery renowned for its reclining Buddha carved into a massive boulder. Climb the wooden staircase to reach the statue, where locals come to pray, burn incense, and
leave offerings, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. In the afternoon, begin your return journey to Siem Reap, arriving back at your hotel later in the day.
